About this herb
Plantain leaf (Plantago lanceolata) — ribwort plantain, the narrow-leafed cousin of the broadleaf plantain in lawns and paths — has been a household herb in Europe for centuries. Herbalists traditionally used the leaf as a soothing demulcent for irritation of the mouth and throat and the dry cough that comes with it, and as a simple poultice for minor skin irritation. Europe’s medicines agency keeps it on the books as a traditional remedy for those throat and cough uses.
Suggested use
Shake well. Adults: take 1–2 droppersful (about 1–2 mL) in a little water or under the tongue, up to 3 times a day. Start at the lower amount and see how you do. In Europe, the traditional ribwort plantain tea is 2 g of the leaf in 150 mL of hot water, two to three times a day.
