About this herb

Yellow dock (Rumex crispus) is a deep-rooted relative of sorrel whose root has a long history in Western herbalism as a bitter “alterative” — a category of herbs traditionally used to support the body’s everyday cleansing processes, especially where the skin and digestion were concerned. Traditional practice used the root as a mild laxative and digestive bitter, and Health Canada’s compendium has been cited in reviews of the genus Rumex documenting these traditional uses and the chemistry behind them. Yellow dock root is also traditionally valued as a source of plant iron in folk practice, though it is the root’s bitter and laxative constituents (anthraquinones) that modern references focus on.

Suggested use

Shake well. Adults: take 1–2 droppersful (about 1–2 mL) in a little water or under the tongue, up to 3 times daily. Start at the lower amount and see how you respond.

For reference, professional monographs describe the traditional root preparation as a tea of 2–4 g of the root up to 3 times daily, used for no longer than about 8–10 days at a time.
